DooR to DooR

“Thank you for treating me like a person instead of like a patient.”

In the beginning was an idea - that the hospital is a place for art. And that we should bring arts to each patient - in his or her room - DooR to DooR. Joy Javits founded DooR to DooR eleven years ago, and has brought music, magic, hope, and happiness to patients, staff, caregivers, and the community at the University of North Carolina Hospitals.

"My name is Gloria...and I was a patient at UNC Hospitals.  I was released this last Wednesday after having surgery.  Some people of your program came by, and I just wanted you to know that it was very uplifting and it was very inspiring to me, and I just wanted to call you to say Thank You."

“Thank you for showing us that magic and joy do still exist in this world. You have lifted our spirits in this struggle."

   Dear Ms Malik,
It was the most fun I had a t school in a long time.  Those songs you taught us were very fun to sing and learn.  I am going to write in the book you gave us and try to memorize that song everyday.  Please come back soon, we enjoyed you coming.  From Rachel

Nearly 200 professional performing and visual artists visit, perform for,
and interact with patients, caregivers, and visitors throughout
UNC hospitals, nearly every week of the year.

The arts are uplifting, the word most used to describe the artists’ visit; they give us strength, they feed us with laughter and tears and compassion; they take us to our core.
The arts help us heal.
