“Thank you for treating me like a person instead of like a patient.”

In the beginning was an idea - that the hospital is a place for art. And that we should bring arts to each patient - in his or her room - DooR to DooR. Joy Javits founded DooR to DooR eleven years ago, and has brought music, magic, hope, and happiness to patients, staff, caregivers, and the community at the University of North Carolina Hospitals.

"I have sung for many different types of audience but the responses and depth of connection and appreciation from so many of the children and their parents we visited was unlike any other I've had in all my years as a singer-songwriter.  The benefits of music that I have long known about were clearly manifested during our time with those sweet children.  I'm very thankful for the opportunity to have shared with them."

Janet Bratter, guitar and original and "Americana" songs

Nearly 200 professional performing and visual artists visit, perform for,
and interact with patients, caregivers, and visitors throughout
UNC hospitals, nearly every week of the year.

The arts are uplifting, the word most used to describe the artists’ visit; they give us strength, they
feed us with laughter and tears and compassion; they take us to our core.  The arts help us heal.
