Planetree, founded in 1978, is an alliance of hospitals that serves as a catalyst in developing and implementing of new models of health care which cultivate the healing of mind, body and spirit; are patient-centered, values-based, and holistic; and integrate the best of western scientific medicine with safe and effective complementary and alternative therapies. The Planetree, or sycamore, is the tree under which Hippocrates, the founder of modern medicine, taught his medical students many centuries ago. Under Planetree, our patients teach us to humanize the health care experience.
UNC Health Care joined Planetree in November, 2001. The Planetree initiative is based in the Clinical Cancer Center of the North Carolina Cancer Hospital, and receives generous support from the UNC Hospitals Volunteer Association and the Medical Foundation Excellence Fund, as well as all of those individuals who support the Butterfly Garden and our other Planetree programs.
